KARA AND KOKOPU

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The residents of this district held their social and dance in aid of tho Earthquake Fund on Thursday evening. Favoured with a beautifully fine night, the enthusiastic committee were rewarded by an attendance that constituted a record for the district, Several carloads from Whangarei, and a largo contingent from Maungatapere wore present, and the accommodation in the hall was taxed to the utmost. Dancing was, of course, the main item, and was carried on merrily to the strains of Mrs Woods’ orchestra, whose services were freely given as a donation, and for which they were heartily thanked. An apology was tendered on behalf of the Mayor of Whangarei, who was unavoidably absent. Vocal solos by Messrs Fred. Baker and H. Linnell, and recitations by Mr 0. D. Dawson, were splendidly rendered and heartily encored. The Monte iCarlo waltz was won by Miss Maggie Lake and Mr F. Schultz, A number of guessing competitions were well patronised, and helped to swell the proceeds appreciably. Winners were as follows: Large cake, W. Kokich and C, Nelson, equal. Smaller cake, B. Mason. Length of .streamer, Mr Dawson. Beans in bottle, Mr J. Lennane. Doll’s name, Mrs W. Attwood. Weight of sheep, No. 1, W. Miller and M. Dent; No. 2, Jas. McKinley. Oil painting, Owen Henwood. Cushion, W. Miller,

The duties of M.C. wore capably carried out by Messrs A. Walker and McCabe, while the supper arrangements were all that could be desired. The door takings amounted to £9'lss, and the total collected to date is about £42. Well done, Eara-Eokapul
