ONERAHI NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

PERSONAL. Having taken up future residence in Whangarei, Mrs Fargher left on Friday with her family for the new home. , During her sojourn in the township she , has made many friends, who will re- ] grot her going. Besides taking an ( active part, in .social matters, Mrs ( Fargher was an indefatigable worker . in the Sunday School and, as a favourite teacher with the children, her place , will be hard to fill. . A GARDEN CITY. Onerahi, in the near future, bids fair to become a garden city. Efforts at adding to its natural beauty are in full swing, in the way of forming avenues of trees along the main roads. On either iside along Domain Road, from the bus stop, opposite the Post Office, to the intersection of the County Road, a double row of puriris alternating with other native trees, has been planted and, already, trees are in position, on one side along the County Road as far as Skellern’s corner, and plane trees, already planted, will line Park Road to Church Street. The rough growth on the sides of the roads is being cleared grubbed and burned, the ground, .scarified and sown down, in grass to form lawns. Trees are ever things of beauty, and, given a few years’ growth, the present work cannot fail to add materially to One--rahi’s scenic attraction. The trees, I understand, are the gift, to the people, of Mr H. Wilkinson and other publicspirited donors, and the former is bearing a great part of the expense in connection with the scheme. A COLLISION. What might have been a very nasty accident occurred on Tuesday near Attwoodfs corner on the Whangarei-H-ea-ds Road, when a lorry driven by an Onerahi resident collided with a second travelling down from Whangarei. Owing to the narrow width of the road in that spot, it was impossible | for the vehicles to pass, and it was l only by the careful handling of the drivers that one or other was not forced over the high bank to the beach below. As it was, each vehicle .suffered icousidoraible minor damage, necessitating a visit to the garage. The l other traffic on the road was hung up for some time. This makes the fifth accident that has occurred in this part of the road since Christmas, and there are continual complaints from the I travelling public as to its 'narrowness. SCHOOL FOOTBALL. To use a familiar colloquialism, the lads of the Onerahi School Football Club are well .able to keep their end up, and wdn laurels all along the line. After a strenuous tussle on Wednesday, on the Domain ground, their match

against the boys of the Whangarei School resulted in victory for Onerahi by 22 points to nil. Play was fast throughout and from the outset, it was apparent that superior form and tactics of the Onerahi lads had their opponents very much at their mercy. Nevertheless, Whangarei put up a good fight but, though more than once they came within an ace of scoring, they were unable to bring it off.

It was an all-round victory for Onerahi on Wednesday, girl pupils of the school being but a degree behind their brothers of the football field, in their basketball match against Whangarei. The game was an -exciting -one, and pretty to Ava-tch, each side vieing with its opponents to give no points away. The Whangarei girls played up -well, and wore loth to -admit defeat, but the contest closed with the score: Onerahi 15 points, Whangarei 4. RELIEVING TEACHER. Mr Black, relieving teacher, under •the Education Board arrived from Kchukohu during the (last fortnight to assume temporary headmastership of the Onerahi School vice -Mr Armstrong transferred to Kakahi.
