EX-SERVICES ASSOCIATION

MONTHLY MEETING,

DISTRIBUTION OF BOOKS,

A meeting of the Empire Ex-Services Association was hold on Friday evening. A largo volumes of inward and outward correspondence was dealt with, and accounts totalling £3 7s fid were passed for payment.

Prior to the business of the meeting the president, Colonel J. N. McCarroll, made reference to the death of Mr Peter Sturt Brown, and the secretary was instructed to convey a message of sympathy to his relatives.

The president reported that last month Mr Harrison, Dominion Secretary of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, had made a special trip to Whangarei. The executive was addressed by Mr Harrison, who submitted at some length an extensive list of the comprehensive activities of the headquarters of the N.Z.R.S.A.. It is hoped that Mr Harrison will be available again to address the association on what is being done by the N.Z.R.S.A- by co-operation, and what may yet be accomplished, A member pointed out that there were always some •ex-service men in the Whangarei Public Hospital, and consequently members had an opportunity of demonstrating that the old spirit of comradeship still existed by visiting them. Books and cigaretjtes were always appreciated.

The association sends books and magazines away to adjacent Public Works camps, and the demand greatly exceeds the supply. Mr J. A. Brown, of the Public Works Department, receives for distribution any books and magazines discarded by the public
