TARIFF RATES
AMERICAN INCREASES WORLD-WIDE PROTESTATION. .VERY DELICATE PROBLEM. (Australian Press Association.) (Received 10.33 a.m.) WASHINGTON, March 15. The volume and intensity of protests from foreign nations concerning the contemplated increase of American tariff rates has created an international situation in which "nearly the whole world seems to be arrayed against the United States.
Tho delicate problem confronting President Hoover is causing concern among American diplomats here and abroad, as the House Ways and Means Committee has finished the first draft of the new Tariff Bill to be considered at a special congressional session. Great Britain, Italy, France, Cuba and Canada have joined in tho vehement South American protests. Diplomats here say they see nothing feasible to do about the situation. The Administration is pledged to increase the duties on agricultural products. The plan for such increase was written into the Kepublican platform and championed during the campaign, and is regarded by the Republican leaders as an absolutely essential step to the protection of American farmers.
