BOWLING NOTES
CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS. The success of H. Westwell of the local club in the above competition, held in Whangarei last week, was,'by all accounts, thoroughly deserved, and the news was received here with ?. great deal of pleasure by his club mates. ‘ ‘ Harry ’ ’ is one of our most unassuming members, his quiet disposition preventing him from anything in the way of self-advertisement. This trait, however, is thoroughly understood by his fellow bowlers and appreciated, as is this, fine player’s skill with the “woods,” and after his fine bowling in the local green championship it came as no surprise to find him capable of attaining fame as the champion singles player of 1929 in the North Auckland Centre. Needless to say, he was the recipient of hearty congratulations, not. only from his club mates, but from the players he defeated and their club members as -well. “Harry” made his acquaintance with the good old game in Lancashire, and for some time was a devotee of “The Crown Green Game,” which is largely played in many counties of the Old Land. Trained in such a school, it is not surprising that Westwell is a fine singles exponent of the game, as played in. this country.
