OBSCENE LITERATURE

“THE SLEEVELESS ERRAND.”

ISSUE TO BE DESTROYED. (Australian Press Association.) (Received 2.30 p.m.) LONDON, March 4. The Bow Street Magistrate decided that “The Sleeveless Errand” was obscene, and ordered the destruction of all printed copies. ! The Public Prosecutor declared that this book of 239 pages, covering a period of two days, was told in the form of conversations by persons entirely devoid of decency and morality. Blasphemy was freely indulged in by all the characters. Filthy language and indecent situations were the Whole keynote. It was amazing that such a collection of degrading muck should be printed by any firm. Defending counsel said that Mr Erie Partridge, formerly of New Zealand, who established the Seholartis Press, read the manuscript personally. It was also well recommended by a /well-known reader. /Counsel admitted that it included many horrible things, but the intention was to mirror the life, language and habits of certain sections. Mrs Norah James, author of the book, was present throughout the hearing.
