WHAU VALLEY SCHOOL

“BREAKING UP” CEREMONY.

There was a large and representative gathering of parents and friends of the pupils at the Whau Valley School yesterday afternoon, when the “breaking up” ceremony took place. The children and visitors assembled in the pretty school ground, and the chairman of the .School Committee, Mr F. G. Ross, speaking from the main entrance steps, extended a hearty welcome to all. He said they had assembled to assist in winding up the work of the school preparatory to its entering into a "well earned rest for the mid-summer holidays, and in so doing they expressed to the teachers and scholars appreciation for the full measure of success that had been achieved during the past year. At the present time the Whau Valley school set a high standard of efficiency, and there was not the shadow of doubt that it was going to play a very important part in the progress and development, of the locality which it served. Mr Ross, addressing himself particularly to the pupils, emphasised the responsibility that rested with the children in upholding the -prestige of the school. He then proceeded to present a number of prizes .i which had been donated by- generous-hearted people who had great interest in the welfare of the school. He congratulated those scholars . whose' work and whose play had been of such outstanding character as fo merit reward. To those who had not received prizes he extended a word of encouragement.

The prize list was as follows; Home Gardening Competition. (Ist prizes).—Bruce Cochrane, Desmond Hoey, Irwin Hawkins, Roy Hoey, Ken White, Nelson Ross, Norman Hill, Tom Murray, Peter Worsp, Fred Philpott, Edith Sothern, Olwvn Trigg, Islav Blake.

Primers ’ Home Gardening Competition.- —Bruce Maxwell, Jean Sothern, Joan Cochrane, Leslie Day. Best all-round boy of school. (Prize presented by Mr Solomon). —Ernest Shucksmith.

Best all-round girl of school. (Prize presented by Mrs Allen).—Mary Bull.

TENNIS PRIZES.

Cup donated by the president of the Whau Valley Tennis Club (Mr Shuck smith) for school tennis championship. —Mostyn Green.

Prize presented by Mr Porter for most improved boy tennis player.— Gregor Watson. '

Prize presented by Mr Cole for most improved girl tennis player.—lsobel Holman.

Mr C. S. Solomon then delivered an interesting address to the children, after which the company adjourned to the classrooms to inspect the w r ork done by the children during the year. A Christmas Tree, loaded wdth articles presented by well-wishers of the school, was the next object of attention, and sales of gifts, added to the takings at a sumptuous afternoon tea provided by the ladies, resulted in ■a sum of £lO Is 9d being raised for the purchase of books for the school! library. j
