SCHOOL CONCERT

SUCCESSFUL VENTURE. | . ! During the week a number of pupils of the Hikurangi School, assisted by. several adults, staged a concert in the Criterion Theatre. The move-, meat was promoted by the Hikurangi School Committee and organised Mr B. Farriman and Mrs .1. Spark.' The object of the concert was to raise| funds to assist in the establishment of a permanent water supply for the school bath. > So successful was thej venture that the sum of £l6 was rais-j ed, and this amount, with the funds already in hand makes it possible forj the committee to fmapee the necessary installation.

The concert was well attended and the items were enthusiastically received by an appreciative audience. As a prelude to an attractive programme,] Mr Farriman’s orchestra contributed a bright number. Songs were rendered by Mr E. Davidson and Mesdamesi Rodgers and Fenney. The Rev. T. W.j hid wards and Mr G. Martin, who con-1 tributed humorous songs, had a hearty reception. Other attractive items v ere a vocal quartette by Mesdames Fra'tt and Fenney and Messrs Pratt and Smith, a trio by Messrs J. Mce, G. Lawson and G. Pratt. Misses A. Campbell and G. Wilson, both pupils of the Misses K. and M. So Iberville of Whangarer, gave a splendid interpretation of a Dutch dance and were repeatedly recalled, as was little Miss S. Baxter, who danced with grace and effect the Highland Flihg, Sword | Dance and Irish Jig. Master E. Cunningham rendered in a most accomplished manner a cornet solo, and he was warmly applauded for his effort. An item which was most impressive and very popular with the audience was Mrs J. Spark’s quintette of xnirthmakers, consisting of five yoimg| ladies. Their delightful patter, humorous stunts and songs kept the audience in a ripple of merriment, and nt the conclusion of their turn each was the recipient of a bouquet of spring flowers. The second half of the programme consisted of a comic picture, kindly contributed and screened by the proprietor of the theatre, Mr H. Harris. Mrs J. Spark played the various accompaniments.
