■CROQUET CLUB 'S ACTIVITIES. Tho Hikurangi Croquet Club conducted its annual Paddy’s Market and Bazaar in the Criterion Theatre last Friday afternoon and evening, with a view to augmenting its funds. The venture proved an unqualified success the gratifying sum of £42 being raised. The interior of the theatre bore evidence of many untiring efforts on the part of the croquet ladies to pro-, sent to patrons,* to the best possible advantage, their many wares. There were a number of attractively arranged stalls, each laden with an abundance of such goods as sweets, homecooked dainties, flowers, vegetables needlework, etc. A stall for dispens-; ing tea, cakes and ices was also in J evidence, whilst provision was made for conducting a number of popular competitions. The various stalls wore occupied by! the following ladies: —Cakes etc., Mesdam.es H. Hawkins, W. L. Phillips] and J. Fuge; sweets, Mesdames C. B, Gager and D. Cotterill; flowers and vegetables, Mesdames T. AlcKegg, T. Jones and P. Cunnold; needlework, Mesdames 6. Kerr and T. Wilson; tea and cakes and ices, Mesdames N. Gibson and 0. Robertson. Throughout the afternoon and evening business w r as brisk, those present spending liberally. The ladies who

took part in conducting the venture worked ceaselessly and are deserving of a word of thanks for their efforts. The multifarious duties of the club’s energetic secretary, Mrs A. M. G. Ward', although extremely arduous, were efficiently executed and she is deserving of every commendation. | FIRE BRIGADE. . j Air T. T. Hugo, Inspector of Fire, Brigades, paid a visit of inspection to the Hikurangi Fire Brigade on Tues-: day night. i At his request, the Brigade, which; was in full strength, conducted a wet practice but had not progressed far j when an alarm was received. I Fourteen tables were commissioned! to accommodate the gathering of card] enthusiasts at the Anglican Church, whist tourney held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday night. Splendid prizes were offered for competition and' lent added interest to the proceedings. In the ladies section, Airs .1. W. Hansell registered most points and was the recipient of a handsome fruit

dish. Her total of 166 points is the highest attained by any player since the inception of these tourneys. The men’s prize, a parcel of mercery, was annexed by Mr M. Viscovich with a score of 151.
