FOR A HEALTHY LIFE
moderate use of alcohol. “The Scientific Press” of Loudon (Faber and Gwyer, Ltd.) have published in their series of “Modern Health Books,” one by Dr E. T. Burke, who' is a recognised authority on Alcoholism. Dr &urke says:— “The vast majority o'' people who take alcohol .are by no means ‘alcoholics. ’ A glass of beer with lunch is no more alcoholism than a weekly visit to church is religious mania. The taking of a moderate, amount of alcohol is a powerful factor in creating sociability, in saving sanity, and in protecting civilisation from boredom. It increased both the health and happiness of many people. There is not, and' never has been, the slightest evidence to support the nunu'.de assertion that the modernte use of alcohol is evil, that it causes illhealth ami moral deterioration. On the contrary, it has been productive of mucili mental rest, enjoyment, ‘happindss, and good fellowship, and is conducive to a healthy life and .bright mental outlook. There can be no doubt that much harm has been done to 'the cause of real temperance by the prohibition fanatic, who .possesses exactly the same nervous instability that produces the inebriate,” <)
