OBITUARY

MR GUY S. CHEESMAN,

Mr Guv Spence de Moilaix Chessman. who lias been resident on his farm on the Kaiatea for the past nine years, died suddenly yesterday while helping some neighbours to improve the clay road. Dr. Ward was at once summoned, but on his arrival could only declare life extinct. Mr Cheesmau had been some time ago treated for heart affection (due to the War). The late Mr Chcesman was the only son of the late Mr Thomas Chcesman, for many years Director of the Auckland Museum, and a world-wide authority on fauna and flora.

Mr Guy Chcesman was a Major on the reserve of officers, and usually attended the Mounted Rifle camps at Kensington Park. Leaving New T Zealand early in the war as a subaltern in the Mounted Rifles Brigade, he served on Gallipoli with the Canterbury Mounteds, being wounded at Hill 60. Upon returning to the Peninsula he joined the Auckland Mounteds and served under Colonel McCarroll in the Sinai, and Palestine campaigns until ‘ the end of the war. In the notorious Jordan Valley he developed malaria , very badly, and this affected his heart. It was hoped by his numerous friends that the outdoor life, aided by his happy temperament, would have eliminated the old trouble, but this hope was unfortunately not fulfilled. The late gentleman; owing to his cheery demeanour and willingness to take his due share in all the activities of bis little community, was deservedly popular among his'’ neighbours and his death will leave a sad gap in the little group of ex-soldier and other settlers on the Kaiatea. To mourn their loss he leaves a widow and three little children, to whom general -sytrtjjathy will be extended in the phasing of a loving husband and father, whose early decease is due to his efforts, as a soldifer on behalf of his country. The funeral will take place on Thursday, and the interment will be in the Kamo Cemetery.
