WHANGAREI BEAT Y.M.C.A.

ONLY GAME PLAYED

Only one game was played in the Wilding—Whimp Trophy Competition on Saturday. Hikurangi defaulted to Onerahi and Portland secured a postponement of the game against High School. Next week the second round of the competition proper will commence and the meeting of Portland and High School will count in both competitions. The victorious team will hold the Wildiihg-Whimp Trophy for the season.

The weather was unpleasantly hot for the meeting between Whangarei and Y’.M.C.A. at the old High School ground. Whangarei thoroughly deserved its two-point victory maintaining the upper hand in all departments. The scoring at the opening of Whangarei’s innings did not give any indication of what was to follow. Only three runs were scored off Dunn’s first four overs, but then Jennings, after being missed in slips, started to make the leather fly. Gash and Thomas were also aggressive, but the best knock was Stevenson’s, whose 37 included a off J. Collins. Baigent also showed good form, and Neild treated anything loose with scant respect. The batting of the whole team was a model of consis tency, and on the slow wicket the bowlers had a thankless task. J. Collins, who took five for 50, was the most successful bowler. ,

With Grove and Taylor playing the bowling with ease, it appeared as though Y.M.C.A. might be able to make up the big leeway, but at 34 Taylor was deceived by a change of pace. Dunn made a dozen and then snicked a ball on. Wentworth was dismissed next ball, and three were down for 55. With but five added Grove ran himself out, and Y.M.C.A.’s chances of a lead were relegated to the background. Hedditch, a new player from Hawke’s Bay, made a good showing, but Stevenson, bowling with more success than hitherto this season, took a wicket in each of five consecutive overs. The last pair were together before Letford gained a lucky four and saved the follow-on. Whangarei were satisfied with * a first innings win, and played out time. Thomas played an excellent, forceful innings for half a century. He hit a six off Letford and five fours. Neild again batted well, and the Y.M.C.A. attack was thoroughly mastered when stumps were drawn. Details of the game are as follow*:
