UPPER WAIROA SHOW

SETTLERS ACHIEVE SUCCESS,

INTERESTING RING CONTESTS

During the afternoon on Saturday the attendance at the Upper Wairoa A. and P. Association’s seventh annual show was considerably- augmented and constituted a record. Most interest centred in the equestrian events, and indeed quite a large proportion did not bother about visiting Hie Setters’ Hall, where ihc indoor exhibits were; in fact, the principal handicap under which the association labours at Tangitororia is the fact that the show ring and the hall are so far distant from one another. Really it would be -worth while considoi’ing hiring marquees and erecting them near the ring, rather than adhering to use of the hafl, which is more than half a mile away. As it was the principal interest manifested on Saturday was certainly in the show ring, am! in the cattle and sheep pons. That part of the show' was quite good, but there was lack of competition in the various classes indoors, except in school work, which was very good indeed. Some of the exhibits were fit to be shown anywhere, and really the same remark applies to the sewing, for, despite the lack of competition, it was of a high order. A model of a bride, which w r as a non-competing exhibit, was splendid. Another outstanding feature of the display in the hall was that of hen eggs. There were two plates containing half a dozen each of extraordinary large size. Cooking was not a strong section, owing to a considerable degree, to withdrawals due to sickness and other causes. In the ring, Mr T. Bezar, the judge of all horse events, was kept busy all day, and some fine animals came under his scrutiny. Riding contests were also well contested, hurdling being very interesting.

As usual at most shows nowadays, Jerseys’were the strongest breed in the cattle section, and the judge was most enthusiastic about the improvement shown. Without being unduly severe, Mr Hilton Hutchinson, judge of Shorthorns and Friesians, expressed the opinion that the beasts shown had not been properly attended to for show purposes, and he also felt that, from such a district as the Northern Wairoa, there should have been a good many more entries. Unless settlers vied with one another in producing better class stock, the show could not do its best cduca tionally to old and young. Allowance had to be made for the dry season, but Shorthorns and Friesians wore not *up to show standard.

The president, Mr H. Cates, has every reason to be pleased with the slioav, and to the secretary, Mr B. S. Angus, Avho was ably assisted iby Mr LeAvis Mansell, is due a measure of praise for the achieved. FolloAving arc UAvards, additional to those published on Saturday;—
