THE SWANN CUP

RETAINED BY HIKURANGI.

On Saturday two full-rink teams from the Kensington Bowling Club visited Hikurangi in quest of the Swanu Cup. Although they were not Successful in lifting the trophy, the games were most interesting.

The first Kensington team, consisting of S. Fulljames, F. Hayward, Barry and Tibbits (s) was drawn to play against Malcolm, Gibson, Phillips and the old A r eteran Campbell (s). Kensington scored one on the first head, but failed to pick the green on the second and Hikurangi scored six. On the sixth head the score stood —Hikurangi 13, Kensington 3. The visitors then forged ahead, and on the nineteenth head the board read —Kensington 19, Hikurangi 17. On the following head Kensington’s third played short and the skip overran the head, leaving Hikurangi three. The board then read 20 —19 in Hikurangi’s favour. On the final head, when the skips went up, Kensington was laying the shot. Hikurangi skip overran the head and Tibbits played a safety at the back of kitty. The old veteran then came Jo light, pushed out Kensington’s shot and lay three. -Number two of Kensington team being well down on the board, the first skip attempted to run the kitty for a score of four, as a tie was of no use, but took out the bowl instead of kitty, leaving the score two up in Hikurangi’s favour, and the final — Hikurangi 22, Kensington 19. Kensington’s No. 2 team, comprising MeMath, H. Hilford, Huyton and J. Courtney (s) met Wood, Robinson, E. Taylor and Seccombe (s). Kensington drew first blood, and at the sixth head the scores were seven all. From then on Hikurangi forged ahead, Kensington only scoring twice, a one and a c two, making the final score —Hikurangi 20, Kensington 10.

Hikurangi thus retained the cup by a margin of 13 points. The visiting players were surprised at the keenness of the local green, which was in excellent order. The teams were accompanied by several of the Kensington bowlers and members of the Croquet Club.
