BISCUIT FACTORY ABLAZE

AUCKLAND, This Day

. A destructive /Ire, causing damage estimated at £9OOO, occurred on Saturr day afternoon in Laurie and Company's biscuit and confectionery factory. The portion where the sweets were made If ' was completely destroyed and severe damage was caused in the biseuit-mak--3 ing section. , The flames were fed by the sugar and other highly inflammable 3 .material used in the factory. Shortly after 4.30 o'clock yesterday fire broke out in the Empire Hotel, a three-storeyed brick building opposite the’ Post Office. The outbreak apparently originated at the rear-, near the kitchen, and within a few minutes the whole of the top floor was a raging furnace. The brigade was faced with an uphill fight and there was little chance of saving the hotel from being completely gutted. The hotel has between 40 and 30 rooms, and the licensee, Mr A. M. Herbert, has been in occupation only a few months. There were quite a number of visitors staying at the hotel, besides several permanent guests. —Press Assn. BOTTLINIG STORE GUTTED. BEER PLOWS IN THE STREET. 1 GISBORNE, This Day, Fire last evening gutted the packing and bottling department of the -New Zealand Breweries Ltd. A large stock of beer was totally ruined, the heat breaking the bottles and causing many gallons to flow into the street. —Press Assn. i EMPTY HOUSE DESTROYED. AUCKLAND, This Day. A large two-storeyed house, owned by P. Alpe, was destroyed by fire at Ellerslie early yesterday morning. The house was unoccupied and contained no furniture, and the originis unknown.. The Ngaruawahia old Municipal Hall, situated just -over the. railway lino, was practically destroyed by fire eaifly yesterday morning. The outbreak occurred in the front corner of the building, but was .got under control, Three and a half hours after the first outbreak, the brigade was again summoned to the fire, which had broken out again at 4 a.m. and after considerable difficulty suppressed the flames. The Ihiuj outbreak in the same building occurred at 7.40 a.m., doing extensive damage. The hall was very old ami insured for £4oo.—Press Assn. REFRESHMENT ROOMS ABLAZE, 6HAKUNE, This Day, Fire broke out in the railway refreshment rooms at 10 p.m. yesterday. The railways fire fighting appliances kept the fire in check until the arrival of the brigade and the damage was confined to the inspector of permanent ways’ office, kitchen, storeroom and coalhouse, all of which were gutted.—Press Assn. STORE AND DWELLING GONE. PALMERSTON N., This Day. At Bunnythorpe, early this morning, fire completely destroyed the store and dwcllinghousc of A. G. Polkinghorne, the occupants escaping in their night attire. The building was insured for £SOO, and there is a similar cover on the stock.—Press Assn.

SEVERAL SUFFERERS. DUNEDIN, This Day. Fire completely gutted the fitting room of G, W, Reilly, tailor, Princes Street, and damage was done by smoke and water to A. and R. Woods, drapers. Mr A. G.
