WARY DETECTIVE

REVOLVER READY. REPLY TO ASSAILANTS. YOUNG MAN SHOT DEAD. (Received 9 a.m.) LONDON, January 30. While Detective John Harling was going to his home in Dublin he saw two men sitting on a seat at the side of the road, and as they looked suspicious, Harling drew his revolver.

When he was entering his gate a shot was fired. The detective replied. A rapid exchange of shots followed and one man ran away.

Harling telephoned for the flying squad and it discovered the body of Timothy Coghlan, aged 21 years. The police are at ’a loss to understand the reason for the attack.

It is not established whether Coghlan was one cf Harling’s assailant? or a passer-by, the shots having brought many people out of doors, —A. and N.Z.
