CHINESE BATTLE

NORTHERNERS trounced SPECTACULAR LOSSES. TIDE TEMPORARILY STEMMED, (United Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received 9 a.m.) ■■ SHANGHAI, November 9.

The Nationalists claim a major victory in Liuho, Honan. Following on five days’ fighting, Peng Yu-hsiang reports the capture of four armoured trains, with 20,000 prisoners, 45 cannon, 100 trench mortars and a similar number of machine guns.

He also states that his forces have reached within three miles of Hsuchowfu, an important strategic railwav centre.

He avers that he will sweep Shantung clear of Northerners within a fortnight. The report is of purely Nationalist origin, but in the absence of Northern denials it is probably true. Another report, however, says that the Shantung Governor, Chang Chungchang, throwing in 30,000 reinforcements stemmed the tide of defeat, renewing the morale of the Northerners. Their position, nevertheless, is extremely precarious.—A. and N.Z.
