A FIRST BIRTHDAY

GIRL GUIDES CELEBRATE. A HAPPY OCCASION. A social gathering to celebrate the first anniversary of the Girl Guide movement in Whangarei was held in the Presbyterian Hall on Monday evening. Mrs D. A. McLean occupied the chair. The Guides attended in full strength under Commissioner Wright and Lieutenants Balgent and Dyer and acting Lieutenants Holmes and Euddoll. An enrolment ceremony was performed by Commissioner Wright. As th result of recent examinations 24 badges were presented whilst the Lily Patrol secured possession of a silver cup for most competition points. Commissioner Wright addressed the Guides on the laws and activities of the movement. One of the most important items of the evening was the reading of the j following letter from Captain N. Harvey, the founder of the movement in Whangarei, who is at present on six months 'furlough: — “My Dear Guides, — “Many, many happy returns of the clay, or perhaps I should say, night. I am keenly disappointed, at not being able to spend suck an important evening with you all, but it is a case of keeping the eighth law very much in mind; however, I am with you in spirit, and Avith a copy of your programme will know hoAV the party is progressing, “Guidos! I can remember clearly, our first meeting just 12 months ago, Avhen about 20 of you sat round and listened to Avhat I had to say about the Avonderful adA r enturo of Girl Guiding. Hoav keen you Avere to learn! And lioav quickly avg managed to get uniforms —just one month later Whangarei could, boast a fine company of keen Girl Guides. “Many of you Avill be presented Avitlr your first service stars and quite a number of proficiency badges. I can only say lioav very proud I am of you all and Avhat a pleasure it was to be one of you. i “Keep the Honour of our company ahvays in your hearts, Guidos: be loyal to your Guiders, and never fail to appreciate the support given to us by our splendid committee. The past year’s Avork has been a success, girls, but avg must not rest here —Omvard! Wc must march in our ucav year until every Whangarei Guide Avears a firstclass badge. “My birthday wish to you all, Guidos. “Continue being a big happy band of Girls and a living representation of our Guide Promise and Luav. ” Prom your loving Captain, NBA HARVEY, The lasting applause, which folloAvcd, amply demonstrated the respect the Guides hold for their captain, A musical programme, Drilling and 'Signalling and games were items of special interest.
