WHANGAREI CRUISING CLUB

MAXAGXESE POINT EE GATT A.

I SCOUT WINS CHAMPIONSHIP. Owing to the threatening weather early on Saturday morning there were fewer patrons at the Whaugarei Cruising Club's annual Anniversary j Day regatta at Manganese Point than was expected, but the lure of the harbour as a holiday resort drew a large number of excursionists by Captain Patterson’s launches, Eakanui and Eva, while many others travelled by the fleet of pleasure craft which made i the resort their rendezvous. Thej full-sail nor’-caster was almost ideal I for sailing events, the direction ! from which the wind came left the j sea smooth near the shore, and swim- 1 mors took advantage of the condl- J tions, there being numbers of them ]

j disporting themselves in the water throughout the day. Ashore people thoroughly enjoyed 'picnicking and the youngsters saw to it that a good polish was kept upon the slide which Unptain Patterson has had constructed and which has proved to be a decidedly popular innovation. During the day two sailing and two launch races wore decided, especial interest centreing in the season championship event for the 14-footers, which, as a class, is the most favoured

in Whangarci. For all raeos' the course was the same: from a starting line between Manganese wharf and the moored Sadie to the black buoy off Takahiwai, to the black buoy off One Tree Point, to a mark boat anchored off Manganese Point, to the starting point.

At 11.50 six boats started in the second race for the Palmer Cup and finishing times were as follow:.. Scout, 14min (W. Pullman), 12.54 k Snipe, ser (W. Patterson), 12.554. All Black, smin (I?. Wilkinson), <12.501.

Banger, .‘bnin IF. Leismann), 1.0 Sea Urchin, scr (F. Beynolds), was j next, followed by Whizz Bang, smin I (T. J. Simmonds), at 1.25 p.m. I Corrected times on the handicaps 1 made Scout the winner, All Black sec- [ and and Snipe third. At 3 o’clock the championship race | for 14-footers started, the competing boats being Snipe, Sea Urchin, All Black, Banger and Scout. After a good start the Scout was first round the nearest black buoy followed by Snipe, All Black, Sea Urchin and Banger. At the second buoy the order was the same, except that All Black had dropped back last. In the run home from One Tree Point Scout led and won bv 14min from Snipe, with Sea Urchin third. The last mentioned, however, skied her, spinnaker and passed the wrong side of the mark, being disqualified, and giving Banger third place. Finishing times were:— Scout (W. Pullman), 3.52 J, 1 Snipe (B. Patterson), 3.54 2 Sea Urchin (F. Beynolds), 3.544 .. 3 Banger (F. Leismann), 3.57 4 All Black (H. Pickmere), 4.2 5 The first launch race was for the Ailsa Craig Cup, in which four craft competed. The finishing order was as follows:

Loloma, 20min (E. Laurie) 1 Winsome, lOmin (A. E. Piekmere). 2 Kopuru, ser (F. Eeynolds) 3

Te Wharo, smin (Drummond Bros) 4 Loloma won casil.v, Imt Kopuru and Te Wharo fought a great finish, the last mentioned being beaten by half a length.

The contest for the Big Tree Cup drew but three entries —Kopuru (P. Eeynolds), ser; D. Baird’s , Stmiu; and Loloma (E. Laurie)', 10 min. Mr Baird’s launch finished half a minute ahead of Kopuru, which was closely followed by Loloma. Most of the excursionists arrived bade at the Town Wharf by 0.30 o'’clock. ■
