SARTORIAL NICETIES
FORMALITIES FOR THE DUKE
TOP HATS AND “BOWLERS.”
Members of Wanganui local bodies arc already feeling concern at the sartorial formalities they will be required to observe when the Duke and Duchess of York will visit Wanganui.
The Wanganui County Council discussed the problem last week. The discussion took an amusing turn when it was stated that a letter from Wellington had stipulated morning coats and top hats as the correct attire for those setting out to meet the Royal visitors. *
Councillors revealed great reluctance to meet these conditions, but it was stated that bowlers and dark ordinary suits might be worn if it came to a pinch.
In an exchange of good-humoured bandiage one councillor suggested that the council “shout” the chairman a top hat.
Another councillor said the chairman would have to apologise to the Duke on his behalf, as he would be absent doing his milking.
It was stated that if a “community” top hat were acquired by the council it would be kept at the county office —presumably in the safe—and used by any councillor when suitable occasions arose..
A further sugestion was that the clerk should use the sombre headgear on Sundays, and one councillor expressed the. opinion that the county hat should be of the collapsible variety.
