IMPERIAL DEFENCE

COMMITTEE REORGANISATION URGED BY EARL BALFOUR. MINISTRY SUPERFLOUS. (Received 9 a.m.) LONDON, June 17. Pronouncement against the Ministry of Defence was made in the House of Lords by the Earl of Balfour, replying to Baron Thomson, who urged reconstruction of the Committee of Imperial Defence, with greater executive power regarding policy.

The Earl of Balfour said that administrative co-ordiilation was going on happily. The Ministry was in process of establishing a College of Imperial Defence for the purpose of dissemlinatiiig knowledge ensuring cooperation on the military side. Personally he could not see any gain in having a .Minister of Defence if the Imperial Defence Committee were left as it was, because it was more able to effect co-ordination of the civil and military services than the Minister would be.

The Earl of Cavan said that the present system worked smoothly and well. It would bo extremely ill-advised to try to change.—A. and N.Z.
