FIRES
PICTURE SHOW DESTROYED. I IGNITION OF FILM. GISBORNE, May 3. An outbreak of fire occurred at a country picture show at Te Karaka on Saturday night, shortly after the interval. The hall, in which pictures were being shown was completely destroyed." A worn-out piece of film caught’ in, the gate of the machine, and when Mr. Powell, the operator, went to extinguish the flames another film caught alight, the fire thereafter spreading rapidly. Mr. Powell was slightly burned about the head and hands.—Press Assn.
BUSINESS PREMISES. ■■ BADLY DAMAGED. DUNEDIN, May 3. Moritzen’s Buildings, at the corner of Bond and Jetty Streets, were badly damaged by fire on Sunday morning. The top portion, occupied by Steel and Company, clothing manufacturers, was gutted. W. D. and 11. O. Wills’ tobacco stocks on the second floor were badly damaged, while Ainge and Company’s wine and spirit stocks suffered from water. Everything apparently was safe at 11.45 on Saturday forenoon, when Steel’s employees left the premises.—Press Assn.
