MINE SUBSIDENCE

DUE TO TORRENTIAL RAIN

DEPUTIES 1 CLOSE CALL.

EIGHT HUNDRED MEN IDLED.

(Received 9.20 a.m.) ' SYDNEY, This Day. ‘

As a result of torrential rain a dam near Cessnock overflowed, and the weight of water on the top of old workings of the Aberdare colliery caused many tons of earth to subside into the tunnel and a deluge of water to flow into the pit. Several deputies on duty were swept off their feet, but managed to escape through a shaft. Men are now working feverishly to 'fill the subsidence to prevent further 1 water going into the pit. In consequence of the subsidence 800 employees will be rendered idle for two weeks. —A. and N.Z
