A QUICK DEAL

RACEHORSES CHANGE HANDS,

SEQUEL TO THE DEMURE CASE. WITNESS TAKEN AT HIS WORD. WANGANUI, February 18. Defendant: "You can have the four horses for £1000." Opposing Counsel: "Will you make that offer on oath and have it open for a week?" This was a portion of the crossexamination of Mr D. Lowrie, defendant- in the now famous Demure case by Mr L. Cohen, for the plaintiff, Mr A. Mitchell, a. horse trainer, at the Wanganui .Supreme 'Court on Friday last. The four horses concerned were Demure, a bay marc by Panmure—"Zemanek, a four-year-old filly by Elysian—Zemanek, a three-year-old filly by Postillion—Zemanek and a two-year-old filly by Warplane—Zemanek. , As will be remembered, Mr Mitchell's claim against Mr Lowrie for damages amounting to £2350 failed, Mr Justice Mc- J Gregor holding that two clauses of the lease of the racehorse Demure had not! been fulfilled. . j

It was during the cross-examination that Mr Lowrie was asked if he had received an offer for Demure, and, after declining to name the figure of the suggested' offers, Mr Lowrie from the witnesses' box told Mr Cohen that he could have the four horses (those listed above) for £IOOO. ■ - The case was concluded on Saturday, and yesterday there was an interesting soqucl, when Mr Lowrie was handed a cheque- for £IOOO and tho deal was clinched within a very short time. Yesterday D&mure was taken from the stables of Mr W. H. Dwyer (who had been training the mare since she was taken from Mr Mitchell's stn<ble in December last). It is understood that Demure is to go baidr into Mr Mitchell's stable. It is stnted that the new owner of Demure and the three I unnamed fillies is Mr FimhU Bristol, 'who also owns Bent, a maiden performer by Cyntc-i out of S'v.ct Van, tho dam of Te Kawa. The other three fillies are at present running on Mr Lowrie's fram at Turakina Valley.
