i l FROM MARSDEN ESTATE. NELSON, This Day. | The- late Mr Jaraen Marsden made handsome bequests to the Anglican Church and other religious educational bodies. The benefactions include land and residence at Stoke as a -permanent residence for the Bishop of Nelson and his successors- £4OOO to the new Cathedral fund; an area of land at ■Stoke to the Cawthron Institute for experimental work; also a valuable collection of books, forming the nucleus of a reference library in New Zealand history. The sum of £llOO is given to the Salvation Army, and the interest from certain English colliery shares to Dr. Barnado's Homes; also £3OO to the infimary at Whitehaven, Cumberland. The sum of £6OOO is given to the Board of Missions and £4IOO to the Melanesian Missions. The residur ary estate is devised as follows: —One half to the Nelson Diocesan Trust Board, one quarter to the Salvation Army and one quarter to the Cawthron Institute*—GPress Assn.

He gave substantial financial support to the Nelson diocese. Recently he gave to the Cawthron Institute 64 acres of valuable land at Stoke for experiments in -agriculture and forestry, Ms main object being the encouragement of research in the many and varied problems which beset the fanner in Iris work.
