PLAYING WITH DEATH i ■ - i HIGH TENSION WIRE CUT. WARNING TO THE PUBLIC. WELLINGTON, This Day. On Wednesday evening one of the main transmission lines from Mangahao to Wellington failed owing to a fault which could not that night owing to darkness. Next afternoon it was found near Field's forest reserve. Inspection showed that the wire of the transmission line had been cut through by a, rifle bullet. As this wire carries a very high voltage, the consequence of the break might have been very serious. The danger to life and property which may be caused by cither wilful or accidental damage to transmission lines was evidenced in the Waikato district recently, when a line which, was down came in contact with a fence and charged, it with high voltage electric current. This caused the death of a man and his grandson. The department points out that the break on the Wellington line might have hhd the same results had the wire come in contact [with a fence or any material that would conduct electrical current. In cases of this nature electrical energy will travel for miles along a fence, and persons or stock at a- great distancefrom the' damaged section may be fatally injured. The Public Works Department has placed the matter in the hands of the police, and is offering a reward of £SO rfor information which will lead to the conviction of any persons concerned in damaging the line.—Press Assn.
