When Wilfred Macartney, aged 28 years, monacled, was charged at the Old Bailey with breaking and entering a West End store, he told a story of an amazing career. He was sent to Constantinople, where he served until 1919, when hfe took up his father’s interest in the Malta tramways, increasing his holdings to £63,000.
