AMAZING CAREER
! PRISONER'S NARRATION | ACTED AS KING’S COURIER. WAR-TIME EXPLOITS. (Received 9.5 a.m.) LONDON, February 17. When Wilfred Macartney, aged 28 years, monacled, was charged at the Old Bailey with breaking and entering a West End store, he told a story of an amazing career. He fought in France at the ag - e of 16. He was a commissioned officer in the Royal Scot’s in 1915. Later he was Governor of Zea Island, in the Aegean Sea, and then became King’s messenger between Corfu and Rome. He was decorated by M. Venizelos for quelling a mutiny. Macartney rejoined the Royal Scots, and was wounded and taken prisoner at Cambrai. He escaped by jumping from a train and made his way to England. He was sent to Constantinople, where he served until 1919, when hfe took up his father’s interest in the Malta tramways, increasing his holdings to £63,000.
Accused said that he actually chased a. man who broke a window in tho store, but in the scuffle the police arrested him, while the real culprit escaped, although all along he protested his innocence.—A. and N.Z.
