Mr E. V. Morrish, of the Bank of New Zealand at Auckland, has been visiting his parents at Whangarei. Dr. E. B. Dodds, of Nelson, Has been appointed assistant to the professor of Geology at the Otago University. Mr D. G. Clark has been appointed a commission to inquire into cases of hardship arising out of the operation of the land-tax.
Mr G. A. Davidson,' headmaster of Dargavillo school for the past six and a-half years, has recently*taken charge of the Whau Valley school temporarily, pending the appointment of a permanent headmaster.
The death occurred at Gigborne on Friday of Mr George Langdale Sunderland, E.N., aged 73 years. At the age of 13' deceased entered the Royal Navy and served for nine years. -In 1875 he took up farming in Poverty Bay. Deceased was the first manager of Nelson Brothers’ Tauheru works, and later manager of the Tomoana works, Hastings. He was a prominent member of the Hawke’s Bay Club, and for a number of years, till the time of his death, was its president. The; authorities of Saint Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, have granted permission for the erection of a memorial to Robert Forgussou, the Scottish poet, at the expense of Hon. James Craigic, of Timaru. The memorial has been designed'by the King’s sculptor for Scotland. Mr Craigie has been made honorary president of the Burns Federation in recognition of his work in Scottish vernacular verse.
