GLOOMBUSTERS' CLUB

LADIES ENTERTAINED. A RECORD EVENING. The seating accommodation at the Gloombusters' CI ib on Thursday evening was taxed to the limit, the occasion being the entertainment of the lady friends of members. The attendance was a record no fewer than 82 being present. These functions are gaining in popularity and it is anticipated that the next occasion will demand that the gymnasium will have to be commandeered.

fiie principal speaker of the evening, Mr A. H. Gurtis, delighted the assem-

bly with his "reminiscences of bushwhacking- days,'' roars of laughter greeting the various anecdotes. A delightful musical programme was presented, the community items being rendered in fine style. The whistling c.hoius of the ladies, needless to say, brought down I/to house. Individual items were contributed by Mrs C. Burnett and Messrs L. Younghusband, S. James, E. Haycock, C. Burnett, Downing and C. Tavior. Two novel competitions were held, the ladies being asked to give their impression of men and similarly the men to give their ideas on women, the answer to be confined to 20 Avords. Mrs Bert Whiting's contribution, "Men are inferior to women. If you don't believe it, look round the room —it's obvious,"»took the first prize in the ladies' section, whilst Mr F. Higginscn succeeded in the men's division with: "Women, the last work m God's creation, man's solace, torment and chief blessing.'-' A merry evening was brought to a close at 11 o'clock by Chief Buster Sid Low announcing the Dirge and the National Anthem.
