FOOLING THE YANKEE

(To the Editor.) Sir, —A friend of mine sent me the issue of the "Advocate" of June 20 and in the same he drew my attention to the article on "Roald Amundsen." He underlined a portion dealing with the much talked of area of land and warm geysers in the Arctic circle. Amundsen, according to the article, calls this theory "damned nonsense." I am sending you an article taken a few days ago from the "Star." The same deals with the above matter, termed by Amundsen "damned nonsense." In the "Star" article we are told in a few days an expedition is to set out to try and discover this "damned nonsense." Now, sir, is it fair for Amundsen to fool the Yankee scientist in this manner and get the smart ones of America to subscribe money to look for what Amundsen called "damned nonsense"? This subject brings us to something nearer home. I want to refer to Wonder Clay. We are told by scientists that this clay has been made by geysers or hot springs and that the same clay can be found in Iceland, so if this is not "damned nonsense," then hot springs or geysers do or have existed in the Arctic circle. —I am, etc.. C. T. MITCHELL, Puhi Pulii.

(The article forwarde d by MiMitchell indicates that Amundsen idea is that the American scientists should look for the "blind spot" on the map, which may hold secrets of value. It is not suggested that this land, if it exists, contains inhabitants or geysers.—Ed. "N.A.")
