NORTHLAND'S JERSEYS

PEDIGREE AND GRADE,

An absolute dispersal sale i of interest to dairymen will take place at Te K'opuru on Saturday next, when the well-known Northland's herd of pedigree and grade Jerseys will be offered for unreserved sale on behalf of the vendor, Mrs. O'Callaghan. The foundation cows in this herd are worthy of special mention, and in nearly everycase are still young animals just coming to their prime. The daughters of these cows being by richly bred sires of show-ring and butter-fat backing are, by the recognised laws of breeding, likely to be even better than their dams. The S.O.R.'s of these cows does not in any way indicate their capacity, as more adverse conditions for testing than they had woulcl be hard to imagine. The performance of Hua Brook Yerna on cold, wet pasture, with a preponderance of "fog" and buttercups, is in kfeeping with the great blood slie represents. Verna, it is interesting to note, has a strong.infusion of the great Bilberry blood, through Aster's Bilberry, the daughter of Bright Aster, who sired Aster's August Child—9oslb of fat—and several other daughters averaging over 5001b fat. The Squire, K.C.B. (5 times), Majesty's Fox, and Campanile Sultan arc each represented in Yerna 's pedigree.

Full particulars are to be found in the catalogue of the pedigree stock. The grades are a fine lot, picked for the vendor's own use, first on breeding and appearance, from consignments bought in Taranaki, and the best of those only were retained for a second season. That Mrs. 0 'Callaghan's judgment was not bad was shown by the results of her three entrants in the Northern Wairoa Jersey Club's butterfat competition, 1924: —No. 1, 2-year heifer, 47.0461b for 30 days; No. 2, 2-year heifer, 36.9301b; and No. 3, 2-year heifer, 36.4681b. for similar periods. These are among the springing second calvers, and the yearling daughters of two of them. Mrs. O'Callaghdn's Jerseys have scored largely at the local shows for years. As recently as November, 1924, they won the points prize for grades, silver cup for best two-year-old pedigree heifer in milk, championship for the herd sire Kuku Nipper, third in class of 13 for the junior sire Ferns Oxford Victor, and 12. other ribbons, with 19 entries. Catalogues are to be had from the vendor, or the auctioneers, North Auckland Farmers' Co-op',, Whangarei, or Alfred Buckland and Sons, Auckland.
