PUBLIC LIBRARY
COMMITTEE MEETING,
The Library Committee of the Wihangarei Borough Council met for two hours on Saturday. Present.—Mesdames Rolmes, Hill and Briggs, Crs. F. Higginson, A. M. Rust and the chairman, Cr A. T. Brainsby. Apologies for absence were forthcoming from Messrs A. Price and C. East. It was shown that the income of the Library for June, 1925, from subscriptions, extra books, etc., was £27 2/5, as compared with £31 3/8 for May. The daily circulation for May was 196 and for June 183. A collection of war medals and plaques had been entrusted to the committee by the Defence Department, and the committee was providing a suitable case" in the museum and undertaking all ordinary care, but without further responsibility. An offer from a local business man to meet the library expenses for book slips in return for a small advertisement thereon was considered, but the committee did not feel it was a safe precedent to establish. Owing to the absence of the librarian since the end of May, due to her father's illness, the routine work of the library had been carried on by the assistant librarian, Miss Bain, and the committee recommended that the Council's thanks be tendered to Madame Brainsby, Miss Holmes, and Miss Fox for valuable help voluntarily rendered to the assistant librarian in sharing some part, of her duties.
The position with regard to the library staff was reviewed; and tjlie following resolution was passed unanimously:—'That the librarian, Mrs Glen, having tendered her resignation, ■ the Council be recommended to accept the same." It was also resolved to Tecord appreciation of the good work done by Mrs Glen in the reorganising and development of the library, especially in the juvenile department. Regarding the pending vacancy on tlie library staff, the committee resolved to recommend the Council to appoint Miss Bain as librarian, in view of her two years' service, during one year of which she was in responsible charge, fulfilling her duties to the entire satisfaction of the committee. In the event of that being adopted tlie committee further recommnded that an assistant librarian be advertised for. ] The report was adopted.
