A Paris cablegram today states that a former Governor of New Zealand, Lord Islington, was recently operated on by a French specialist, M. Boyer, for kidney trouble. He is making excellent progress and is expected soon to be completely recovered. A Christchurch telegram reports the death of Mr. R. C. Bishop, at the age of 78 years. He was until lately general manager of the Christchurch Gas Company. He had lived for 75 years in Canterbury, having arrived as a boy on one of the historical first four ships. He was the senior member of the Grand Masonic Lodge of New Zealand. The news has just been received of the sudden death in Sydney of Mr. Cunningham, the gentleman who piloted 1 ' Romantic ; India'' through New Zealand and who made many friends during his short visit to Whangarei with that picture. During a dinner given to Kreisler, the famous violinist, Mr. Cunningham was taken ill with an attack of cerebral hemorrh-

age, from which he died during the same night. He was over 70 years of age, but his youthful manner and energy denied the fact that he had passed the allotted span. . Mr. H. E. Quinn, late housemaster at the Whangarei High School Boys' Hostel, in writing to Mr. J. Mc-Kin-non, secretary of the High School Board, states that he has arrived in London in the best of health, after a smooth passage. He visited Panama City, which was very interesting, and on his arrival in London found the great city as fascinating as ever. He spent some time in visiting the wonderful theatres and shows, including the Wembley Exhibition. He also saw the Derby run. Mr. Quinn has made satisfactory arrangements for attending the University, and concludes his note by stating that the weather in London is delightful.
