A letter has been received from Mr Chas. P. Bryant, of Palmerston North," by Mr H. A. Peebles, secretary of the Whangarei A. and P. Society, stating that a Black Orpington utility cockerel purchased by liim from Mr. A. S. Sowman, auctioneer for Messrs Bevin, Ltd., as a footballer have been required for representative matches which have been played on Saturdays. As this is the day of the week on which Mr Sowman is busily occupied with his duties at the firm's mart sales, Mr Henry Sloane has generously come forward and conducted the sales, thereby allowing Mr Sowman to take his place in the team. On Saturday the Whangarei team is to play at Dargaville for the coveted Harding Shield and once again Mr Sloane, although not in the best of health, has generously come forward and offered his services in order to allow Mr Sowman to make the trip. It is good to find in the community a gentleman with the fine sporting instincts of Mr Sloane and in this issue the Rugby Union publicly notifies its appreciation of Mr Sloane's action.
