LADIES , LETTER.

(Ninon, is always glad to receive news of social items — weddings, dances, parties and so on—for inclusion in her letter. Communications should be addressed to her at the office of the "Northern Advocate.,,) Dear Valerie, The newest turban is made with flapping ears that vary in size according to the model and are Egyptianlooking. Some have ears wired and the same height as the crown in front; in others they are less conspicuous, but it certainly seems the latest idea in the very popular turban design. A charming example of this was in dull black satin heavily embroidered all over in Indian gold, and the scarf to match had the ends embroidered in the same way, and a narrow galon of gold edging it all the way round. The engagement is announced of Dorothea, daughter of Mr and Mrs Thompson, Cafler's Avenue, Whangarei, to Gilbert, son of Mr and Mrs Winnard, Maunu Eoad, Whangarei. Miss Kathleen Kelly, who has been spending a holiday in Auckland and with her aunt, Mrs Kearne, Hatea Street, has returned home to tn<; Hokianga. the bridgo hostesses during the week were itieadamcs A. ouc.k, ' Bird, Delamore and Carter. J The friends of Mr and Mrs Carew j Thomas, former residents of Wha- I ngarei, will be pleased to know that j they have arrived safely in England j and intend having a Continental tour ' before returning to Auckland in ! October next by the Orsova. J Mrs Percy Bedlington is expected i back in Whangarei shortly. ' Mr and Mrs John McMillan are the guests of Mrs Gus. McKay, Mill Road. Mrs Bisset returned from Auckland this week. Mrs and Miss Wnrrington, who have come to town for the High School reunion, are the guests of Mrs Clark j Walker. | Mr and Mrs Walter Millington re- j turned from Sydney on Tuesday. Miss Ann Holmes returned on Mon- j day from a long holiday, mostly spent, in the South. Mrs J. W. Hall had a delightful progressive bridge afternoon on Wedwes day, at her pretty home, Maunu Eoad. The prize winners wore Mrs Sword and Mrs Crane. The friends of Miss Chrissie or.miston will be pleased to see such a good photograph of her in this month's Byd ney "Bulletin. ,, She made a great hit in comic opera. A very pleasant afternoon was spent recently at Mrs Arthur Armstrong's residence, Armstrong Avenue. 'The greater part of the time was ?pen ; t in solving proverbs, the prize going to Mrs Webb. On Monday the Literary Circle met at the Women's Club. The programme was arranged by. Mrs Holmes and Miss Cookson and consisted of short speeches and debates. Great amusement was caused by the discuss'on of the question, "Do women dress to please men?" The Y.W.C.A. members spent a wery pleasant evening on Tuesday last, when Mrs Blair gave a demonstration and display of needlework. Perhaps 'the work that caused greatest interest was the marvellously fine hand-made lace and embroidery on the bonnets worn by the women of Franee. Mrs Blair explained that these bonnets were the cvery-day headgear, the best ones were much more elaborate. Next week the regular meeting is not being held on Tuesday on account of the Cruising Club concert, but is postponed .till Wednesday and will take the form -.of a crepe paper work-bee.
