SHOOTING CONTEST. A COMPLIMENTARY OCCASION. A .shooting match between Maungatapere and Mangapai took place at the local range on December 10. The match was arranged by the local club as complimentary to Mr and Mrs F. B. Hay ward, who were leaving to take up their residenc-eJn Whangarei. Luncheon and tea were dispensed by the ladies at au idea! spot in the shade of native bush on the river bank. After tea Mr W. T. Weir, on behalf «>f the Rifle Club, presented Mr and Mrs Hayward with a silver rose bowl. In asking Mr and Mrs Hayward to accept the gift he expressed sincere regret at their departure and spoke of their many sterling qualities. Mr Hayward has always been a prominent member of the club and a very good shot. Mrs Hayward had always been to the fore i.: social matters, especially in catering for the inner man. During their long sojourn in the district Mr and Mrs Hayward had been

hard-working settlers and excellent neighbours. He wished them all health and happiness- in their new home. Mr W. G. Thomson endorsed what Mr Weir had said and expressed regret at the departure of such good friends. Mr Havward, on behalf of Mrs* Havwaid and himself, very nicely thankeo the club for the nice present and expressions of goodwill. They regretted leaving the district, but were glad to say they were not going far away, and hoped their friends would look them up 5n their new home at Whangurei. "For They are Jolly Good Fellows," was then sung with a will, and the singing of "Auld Lang Sync" brought a very successful function to a close.
