RAGING STORMS
MANY WRECKS OCCASIONED. ALONG ENGLISH COASTS. TWO VESSELS ADRIFT. (Received 9.5 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 31. The gales have caused a number of wrecks of small vessels on the east and south-east coast, with some loss of life.
The Vengeance with 14 men aboard broke adrift, constituting a danger to shipping. Three tugs sent out returned to port failing to find her. She was last reported ten miles off the North Cape of the Hague. The destroyer Menina, when being towed to Milfordhaven to be broken up, snapped the towline and is now adrift in the Channel. —A. and N.Z. BARQUE ALMOST ASHORE. N.S. WALES HURRICANE. (Received 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The barque E. R. Sterling anchored in Sydney harbour narrowly escaped being driven ashore in the Athol Bight. During the height of the storm the vessel dragged her anchors necessitating the captain seeking the assistance of two tug boats, which held the ship after a couple of hours' struggling. The hurricane continued throughout the night. The coastline was swept, the*wind howling along at a mile a minute, mountainous seas crashing on the beaches. The river bars are reported to be dangerous. Vessels are unable to enter or leave. There arc signs of the weather breaking this morning, though a continuance of the storm is forecasted. —A. and N.Z. t
