Since Sir James Craig's statemrint in the Ulster Parliament the newspapers have been busy speculating aiid forecasting the nature of Mr Lloyd George's new proposals. <
The rigid secrecy remains unbroken, the only certainty being that the newspaper forecasts arc wide of the matk. It is not safe to regard the situation as improved, though the more peaceful Sinn Feincrs in Dublin profess ,to see a ray of hope in Sir James Craig's assurance that Ulster is willing to freely consider fresh proposals.—A. and N.Z.

The Royal Irish Constabulary has demanded to be disbanded rather than be transferred to Ulster. They refuse to serve any Government except that of the English Parliament.—A. and N.Z.

AMBIGUOUS PHRASING

The "Daily Mail" says that the new Irish sclieinc includes full self-gov-ernment for the South with the addition of a Second Chamber, which can by consent become a joint Senate. The plan leaves the North intact, except for a few concessions. The financial maclnnery will be adjusted to make a settlement easy and advantageous to both the South and North.
The Sinn Fein raised difficulties as to the meaning of certain vital points. —United Service.
