Early in the season members of the Whangarei Cruising Club entertained hopes of the shed acquired from the Bowing Club being erected on its new site on the upper side of Victoria swing bridge by Christmas, but as the material has not yet been taken to the site, .the prospects of it being ready by the time Christmas and New Year visiting launches arrive seems, somewhat remote.

Gooii entries have been received by jCaptain Dittmer, O.C. District, for the shooting matches for Government prizemoney which will be fired on the Otaika range to-morrow and on Saturday. One party of Territorials and Cadets will arrive from Dargaville and another from the Maungaturoto area. The Cadet matches will be fired (to-.morrow and .those for Territorials on Saturday. There are special matches for returned soldiers. The light and heavy maiden crews of the Whangarei Rowing Club have been training in the early mornings for the Onerahi regatta to take plaie on January 2, and other crews, incluiing pair oar, double sculls and single sculls in the evenings. Good progress is being* made in spite of the fact that delay in completion of the erection of the new shed .has so far prevented all the boats being transferred there from storage in the Drill shed.

Prior to entering the recreation nail to attend the banquet at the Kamo Springs ilast evening the returned soldier patients waylaid Mr E. H. Nicholls, district secretary of the Y.M.C.A., and as the spokesman, Mr Morris put it, "without making a song about it," they presented him with a handsome carved tray and a pipe, as a small token from th<e ex-soldier patient * of the good work he had done on their behalf. Mr. Nicholls suitably. acknowledged the surprise sprung upon him and his appreciation of the memento and the way in which it had been given to him. A speed pennant, similar to that v;hich was won at the regatta at Onerahi last New Year's Day by the Koscmary, has been secured by the Whangarei Harbour Regatta Association, for competition at the next regatta on January 2, 1922, for the launch putting up fastest speed. The Rosemary is now at Opua, and as the Scripps highspeed engine has been replaced by one of less horse-power, she is not likely to be a competitor for the pennant, for which in any case the locally owned Jean 11. will prove a formidable competitor against any visiting craft.

The Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company's • new works at Moerewa commenced killing and freezing operations to-day. There was no formal opening ceremony, it being proposed to liold a function at a later date, when the Prime Minister and other important people will probably be able to attend. Meanwhile the works will cany on with ordinary operations. A. telephone message to the "Northern Advocate" to-day is to the effect thats a full board of butchers is employed and the freezing space is well booked, f o that killing will be in full swing until the break necessitated by the Ch/ist,mas holidays.

How many of earth's greatest rnon have shared in the long, long story of the Nile land, in the wonderful story of Egypt, her native rulers, first and unsurpassed, mighty though their successors were. Then came wandering shicks from the desert, whd founded century-lasting dynasties, Ethiopians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Saracenes, Turks, French under Bonaparte and lastly British. Ramcses, Thotmes. Sete, Cambyses, Alexander, Ptolemy, Caesar, Cleopatra, Antony, Saladin, St. Louis, Ali, Bonaparte, Kitchener, Allenby—the very mention of tjieir names is one long glamour of romance, and achievement and 'undying .story. Such is the land, such its associations, of which Colonel Mackesy will speak in the Town Hall on December 14. In addition to securing efficient service you are supporting a returned soldier in Dobson, Piano Tuning and Repair Specialist. 184
