It is understood that Mi* C. F. Hughes, State Secretary, will tell Japan that she must accept discussion ou Pacific problems as part of the conference. America \vill not allow preliminary discission and is making Japan 's acceptance conditional on this —A. and N.Z.

Japan has asked America for amplification of the proposed discussion on Pacific problems.
In an interview Mr M. Hara, Japanese Prime Minister, said: "Japan will Hpur') no effort to help towards success of the di-armament conference, and welcomes the opportunity to vindicate lier position before the world." —A, and N.Z.

Tlio "Daily Express" interviewed Dr. Wellington Koo, the Chinese Minister, wlio said that China would welcome President- Harding 's invitation to W participate in the conference because it wa-i recognition that no Far Eastern problem, could be solved satisfactorily without the co-operation of China, which would help to lav the foundation of an enduring peace in the Far East. —A. and N.Z.

Mr H. H. Asquith presided at a luncheon'given by the 'Eighty Cluib to the Dominion Prime Ministers. He said that he welcomed Mr Harding's invitation. Whatever the confercnce of: Prime Ministers ha-1 done or whatever it might contemplate doing, it would always >bc associated in history with an event which had a happy augury for the future, namely, the summons to a conference at Washington. Ho also welcomed the Irish conference, the issue of which affected the: Dominions as much as Britain.
