COMMITTEE MEETING The first meeting of the presei committee of the Whangarei Beaut fying Society wa s held in Mr Risl worth's office at 4. p.m. on Wedne: day; present—Mrs R. Foote, Messi H. C. Rishworth (presiding), J. I Henderson. R. C. M. Harinprton, S. ( Thorne, M. D. Fraser (acting seer, tary) and the Rev. G. Lochore. POST OFFICE GROUNDS The urgent necessity was stressed of improving the unkempt appearance ,of tha Post Office righb-of-was and grounds generally, as these, being located in the town centre, pre sen-ted a. particular eyesore to botil lesidentg and visitors. The locale, it was pointed out, did not come within the purview as borough property, o.v.Ci the committee decided or. the appointment of a deputation, com sisting of Messrs Hanlon and Rishworth, to wait upon the Postmaster with a view to the materialising of money already promised by the Department for proper prosecution of thi s very necessary work. COMMEMORATION TREE A vote of thanks was accorded Mr A. R. Pickmere, on the motion of Messrs Rishworth and Harington, for the gift of. a tree which the Gov-ernor-C\eneral, Adnviral, Vvscount Jellicoe, had planted in the hospital grounds in commemoration of his visit to Whangarei. IMPROVING STREETS' APPEARANCE The Rev. G. Lochore suggested that, with the approval of the Borough Council, trees be planted in various streets. As a beginnng he was willing to canvass the residents of Manse Street to ascertain what amount of public support would be available in this direction. The other members of the committee concurred in the view that this would be a good -mejhod , of securing the beautification of streets, provided the Borough Council were amenable to the plan, as the individual cost to residents would'be very small.' It was recognised that, the people of the borough would be glad to* assist in the scheme of improvement. FINANCE Testimony to the low financial status cf the society and the need for public backing of the funds was afforded by the fact that one account of iSii .was authored for payment and the remainder were held ovclpending a better state of. the exchequer. SECRETARYSHIP Mr Murdoch Fraser in. response to the proposition of Messrs Rishworth and Harington, agreed to act as honorary secretary until such time as the society could afford to. remunerate some one with more time to devote to the position. ■ j The customary courtesy vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the i meeting.
