(Own Correspondent.) • SALE OF TIMBER. On Friday morning last, on behalf of the Mangapai Recreation Ground Association, Messrs F. and W. "Wakelin auctioned a considerable quantity of posts, rails and battens. Bidding was fairly brhk, tho proceeds amounting to ciose on £100. DANCE. A very enjoyable dnneo took place at the public hall on '.Friday evening the proceeds being in aid of hall fund?. The mu.-ie 'was supplied by local talent and Mr S. Ormaiuly acted ns M.C. HOCKEY. There was great rejoicing amongst local hockey enthusiasts on Saturday, when the Mangnpai la-vies' team scored a win from High School Old Girls and the men's team beat High School Old Boy=?. After the matches the visiting teams were entertained at tea in the hall. Mr H. A. Shepherd, on behalf of the town teams, thanked the Mangapai players for the very pleasant panics and for the refreshments. Mr D. Miller responded. Mr Linton Palmer, of this district, was suddenly taken ill.nn Sunday, May 15. and removed to the Whangarei Public Hospital suffering from pneumonia, and for several days was in a critical condition. A brother of his, Mr Clifi Palmer, of Onmnn, was attacked by pneumonia at about the same time, becoming toe ill to be removed from his home. Both are now well on toward? recovery. SICKNESS PREVALENT. *. Severe colds are very common in this neighbourhood just now, measles and mumps being also in evidence. At a meeting of the Manawati Sub-Frovincial Executive of tlv Farmers" Union a resolution wa carried urging upon the Governmen i the necessity of enforcing the pro visions of the Stock Act dealing wit! the removal of cattle from district infected with tick into clean dis trets. A delegate from the Rangiot , district said that there was reason t believe that cattle had been brough there from infected districts, and J was pointed out that if that wer the case the provisions of the At were not being enforced.
