ORGAN RECITAL

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH,

NEW ORGAN APPRECIATED.

The Whangarei Preßbyterian Church was taxed to the full limit of its pew accommodation at the services yesterday and at the organ recital after the evening service. The Rev G. Lochore conducted the Christinas Sunday service in the morning, at which the festival hymng and anthems were sung by the choir, solos by Mrs A. Dobson and Mr Lambert. After the evening service the following programme, whi.'.h was such that it thoroughly displayed the beauty and power of the new instrument, was rendered and fully appreciated:— Organ solo, "Offertoire No. 4" j|Wely) and "Salut D'Amour" (E. Elgar), Mr A. Dobson; vocal .solo, "Come unto Him" (Handel)), Mrs A; Dobson; organ solo, "Andante in G" (Batiste), Mr A. Dobson; vocal solo, "The Lost Chord" (Sullivan), Mr O. P. Owen; organ solo (a) "Andanti&o" (Lemare) and (b) " Trumpet March" (Jude), Mr AfT-obson. The artistic and skilful rendition of "Salut d'Armour,", the "Andante in G" and of the " Andautino " by Mr A. Dobson displayed the lich qualities of tone obtainable from ; he organ, while the "Offertoire No. 4" gave the congregation an opportuufty of hearing the instrument in both its power and delicacy, a special feature of the item being the fine pedal work. In Jude's " Trumpet March,''. the different combinations were heard t j a I vantage, the trumpet solo being very effective. , The vocal items were distinctly good, the congregation being delighted with the splendid renditions of Handel's "Come unto Me" by Mrs A. Dobson, .who possesses a very rich mezzosoprano voice. Mr G. P. Owen sang "The Lost Chord" with feeling and the item was a really .good one. The sound dimensions and stops of the instrument, a two-manual pipe organ, are as follows: —Great organ— i Open diapason Bft; dukiana, Bft; clarabella, Sft; and principal, 4ft." Pedal organ—Bourdon, 16ft. Swell organClarinet flute, Bft: salicional. Bft; celeste, Sft; harmonic flute, 4ft; and oboe, Bft. The accessories are "four combination pistons ,a tremulant and a balanced swell, pedal, while the couplers are —great to pedal, swell to great, swell octave, sw r ell to pedal and swell suboctave, the octavo couplers being playable through swell to great. The pedals t are radiating and concave, of the Royal College organ pattern, and the action of the Instrument is tubular pneumatic throughout. Provision of such an organ marks a distinct advance in music in the district and will be fully appreciated by all lovers of a good organ.
