REGATTA ENTRIES.

SPLENDID RESPONSE RECORDED

LARGE STARTS ASSUMED

Entries for the launch, yacht and rowing races to take place at the Regatta at Onerahi on New Year's ! Day close with the secretary, Mr W. M. Murray, this evening. ROWING Rowing «ntries close with the A.R.A. in Auckland and though the question of steamer fares has loomed dangerously during the past few days as a possible deterrent to the number of competitors to be sent by the various rowing clubs, it is understood that the entries will more than equal those of past years, though perhaps they will be fewer than would have been the case had the expenses of travelling not risen so high. LAUNCH RIVALRY I Ujji till noon to-day the launch entries received easily constituted a record in numbers, and there were in addition to those mentioned hereunder several which had been informally entered by telephone message. The cruiser's rac a has drawn no fewer than 22 entries from launches locally owned, and the star race of the day—th e Whangarei Harbour Cup— has 13 boats entered. In both these events there will be considerable additions from Auckland and way ports, and it may be safely predicted that the races will be the biggest ever held North of Auckland. The event for 6h.p. and under has so far drawn 9 aspirants, tno traders' (for licensed boats), 8 and the auxiliary yacht and 4h.p. small launches, 5 each. In All there are 56 entries from the locally owned fleet of 71 launches.

SAILING Only one keeler yacht, the Rotiu, is owned in Whangarei and she has entered against the visiting competitors which will come from Auckland, and of which report states that there will be half-a-dozen or so. In the centre board class, the two locally-owned boats eligible to compete have entered and eight mullet boats at least from Auckland hav e been notified as intending competitors. 1 1 With the one exception of doubt concerning the response from rowing men, the promoters express their conviction that the interest of owners' has been such that, given good weather conditions, the Regatta and Picnic at Onerahi on New Year's Day will be on c of the most important gatherings held in the North.
