CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce iwas held last evening; present —Messrs Rutherford (president), F. Mcßeth, R. Patton, R. Scott and C. Gager (secretary) and Rev. D. McNeur. ■

Northern Steamship Company.—A letter was received from the Northern Steamship Company, stating that it would be advisable for the chamber to await the general manager's return from Australia before sending a delegate to diseuiss freight, charges. New Member. —The Hikurangi Coal Company notified its intention to beeomp fi member of the chamber. It was agreed to 'accept the company and invite it to send a delegate to future meetings. Associated Chambers of Commerce — Circulars were received from the Associated Chambers of Commerce regarding the Land and Income Tax Bill; "These.were distributed among members for their perusal. c Arterial Roads. —A long discussion took place and finally it was ngreod / that the following remit should be sent forward to the .Associated Chambers: —"That this Chamber is of opinion that the time has arrived when the Government should take control of all arterial roads in the country 4 Reasons: (1) A uniform road throughout the country; (2) larger contracts could be given, less expensive; (3) good roads tend to make closer settlement; (4) land values greatly increased; (5) whole country benefited by increased revenue from land taxes and road rates.'' Railway Station.—lt was resolved to write to 'the Inspector of Permanent Way in reward to the continual floodin? of the Railway station yard, it beI ing a source, of great annoyance to the public in approaching the station. • Keener Interest Needed.—Owing to the lack of interest taken by some of the business people in the town, the work of the Chamber is somewhat handicapped. In regard to the varying freight charges, if the business people Avho have "data" would only inform the secretary the Chamber would be able, to voice the opinion of all the business people. By such a movement as this stronger efforts could be made to secure the redress ot grievances. NOTES, The local band wan out on Sunday afternoon and gave selections to the residents of Waro. Of late the band has been doing very good work in this respect and its efforts .have been always warmly appreciated. The Scouts were,in full attendance on Monday evening and under the leadership of Mr A. Steele are making α-ood progress in their work. ° Tennis is in. full swing again and every evening players are getting, into form for the openingmatch on Labour Day. i Followers of the "noble art" were practising last evening and some goox. work was shown by several local pugilists.
