Amongst the immigrants by th c Majnari last week were 28 Cornish miners, who have 'been engaged to work in the Consolidated Goldfields Company's mines at Reefton. When they were asked in Chris'tchureh why they had left England, they answered almost with one voice, that they could not get work. "The Cornish tin mines are closing down, ,, said on e of them. "East Indian tin is killing them. In the East Indies they are using coloured labour, and can land tin in England cheaper than the Cornish mines can produce it." The men ptated that on landing they had been approached by a representative of certain coal mine owners, but had declined, for the present at any rate, to take up coal mining.
