MESOPOTAMIAN TURMOIL.

FIRM HAND LACKING,

RIOTOUS DEMONSTRATIONS.

(Received 8 a.m.)

DELHI, June 17.

The indecision of the policy in Mesopotamia is rapidly developing an acute situation in that country.

Several disturbances have occurred lately in Baghdad. A certain agitator, delivering inflammatory speeches, was arrested. Crowds gathered at the Mosque and elsewhere, collected arms, and set out to rescue the agitator. Rioting occurred when the police intervened. The number of casualties is unknown. An armoured car was attacked, and on a few shots being fired in reply the attackers dispersed.

Recently several respectable Arab residents of Baghdad have been attacked at night with stones. An official communique warns disturbers that the Government will not fail to take the necessary steps to keep tho peace. —A. and N.Z.
