FIRE AT SEA.
A WESTMEATH SENSATION
AUCKLAND, This Day,
The Federal Shire liner Westmeath arrived fom Liverpool' via Panama this morning.
On May 28, about 9.30 a.m., smo_e appeared from the ventilators of No. 4 hold, andifire was located in the 'tween decks, the smoke penetrating the freezing engine room and bunkers. The deck and coamings of the fore part of • No. 4 hold started co crackle. The captain had acids and other dangerous- cargo in the vicinity jettisoned, and the vessel put head on to the wind. Two hoses extinguished the fire, which shortly after midnight was well) in hand. The captain estimates the damage to the ship and cargo as approximately small, but until the cargo in No. 4 hold is discharged it will be impossible to make a reliable statement. —Press Assn.
