The Federal Shire liner Westmeath arrived fom Liverpool' via Panama this morning.

On May 28, about 9.30 a.m., smo_e appeared from the ventilators of No. 4 hold, andifire was located in the 'tween decks, the smoke penetrating the freezing engine room and bunkers. The deck and coamings of the fore part of • No. 4 hold started co crackle. The captain had acids and other dangerous- cargo in the vicinity jettisoned, and the vessel put head on to the wind. Two hoses extinguished the fire, which shortly after midnight was well) in hand.
