STEAMSHIP ABLAZE.
DURING COASTAL RUN
TIMARU, This Day.
The small steamer Mauaroa, 300 tons gross, left Dunedin for Lyttelton and West-port a (> p.m. on Wednesday, with a full cargo of general merchandise. At 6.30 on Thursday morning she was found to have fire in the midship hold. The crew fought the fire all day, and failing to subdue it the mastor (Capain Johnston) made for Tirnaru as the nearest port. The Manaroa arrived at 7 p.m. and the fire brigade was sent for to assist in fighting the flames. A large quantity of water was poured into the hold, but the fire was still burning
at .11 p.m,
This was the Manaroa's first trip after 2'efitting, and Captain Johnston's first trip in her. —Press Assn.
