ONERAHI.

PICNIC AND SCHOOL SPORTS.

Stephens' Point was the locality pitched upon this year for the holding of the function, and there is no doubt the choice was a wise one. Everybody enjoyed themselves to the top of their bent, and last Saturday will certainly rank long as a red-letter day in the minds of the juveniles. Parents and visitors disposed themselves under the shade of the grand puriris, whilst the smaller fry had the time of thenlives amid the wonders of the beaches and the shore rocks. It was a joy in itself to see the delight with which the kiddies chased the elusive crab amongst the stones, or dabbled, 'mid shrieks of merriment, in the soft ripples of the tide. Naturally, in a maritime community, the paramount interest centred in the' swimming contests. Importance has always heen given by the headmaster and "the committee to thorough training in this very necessary branch of physical development and, certainly, the Onorahi scholars, boys and girls, have shown themselves the aptest of pupils. I venture to say that the record put up, on Saturday, stands small chance of being beaten, or even equalled, elsewhere in the Dominion. Noontide saw the boiling of the billies and the feast spread 'neath the greenwood tree. Afternoon saw an adjournment to the school grounds, where the remainder of the sports programme was carried out. At the close cheers were given for the headmaster, the committee, and the caterers. Following is a lost of the events and the names of the winners:— Swimming: C. Drake (1350 yds) 1, W. Drake (1000 yds) 2, W. Pullman and R. Thompson (1000 yds) 3. Girls: D. Brown (550 yds) 1, D. Brown and N. Nordstrand 2, V. Bradshaw and A. Burch 3. CHILDREN'S CONCERT. The entertainment in the Town Hall on Monday night must be taken as a fitting finale and round-off of the sports and picnic. It was a marked success. Quite 250 guests attended. A wellchosen programme was gono through with eclat, and there was not a hitch or dull moment from start to finish. The concert was got up by Miss Dunning and her pupils, quite "off their own bat." The congratulations of those present arc due to Miss Dunning in no small measure. Speeches given by Mr E. N. Ormiston, headmaster, and Mr D. Cockburn were cheered to the echo. Mr J. Cochran moved a vote of thanks to Miss Dunning, which was carried applausively. A very dainty supper was provided and afterwards dancing was indulged in till well beyond midnight. The first two dances were reserved for the children and one of the prettiest sights of the evening was the grand march of the juveniles round the gaily-lit dancing floor. Miss F. Skelleern played the accompaniments at the concert and furnished the music for the dance. Mr A. Rowlands was M.C. The following is the programme presented:— Children's choruses: "Bingo," "The Mermaid," "Tip-Toe," and "Australia;" recitation, Master C. Weir, encored; song, "Lullaby," Miss "D. Brown and D. Connolly; recit, Miss B. Pullman; art dance, Miss D. Brown and N. Nordstrand; chorus, "The Tight Little Island;'' song, Miss B.
